What We’re Enjoying
Although we home educate and learn all year round, the 1st of September always indicates a new start, new beginnings. More so for me than New Years Eve. So as we embrace October and move into my favourite time of year, I thought I’d let you know what we’ve been enjoying.
Mr L
He has almost finished reading Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. He’s not a fan of musicals but loved this show and it inspired him to read the book. It’s a huge book and a mammoth undertaking but he’s risen to the challenge!
New Amsterdam. This isn’t usually the type of programme that Mr L enjoys, but this one has grabbed his attention and made him cry!
Me
I don’t usually re-read books but, inspired by The Talking Appalachian podcast, I’ve made an exception for Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Barbara is Appalachian, born in rural Kentucky, and this book is both heart wrenching and heart warming. You will be rooting for Demon until the end.
We saw a production of The Comedy of Errors at Shakespeare’s Globe. It was a incredible experience. The play is naughty, funny, vulgar and it was a joy to see it performed without censorship.
Sophia, the teenager
Heartstopper Series 3. She has been waiting for this with bated breath and wasn’t disappointed. We watched it together and although the characters are growing up and there are more adult themes in this series, the love story of Charlie and Nick shines through.
Sophia bought a book of Shakespeare’s insults and has had hours of joy practising on us!
Sophia is studying Macbeth for GCSE English literature, so Shakespeare looms large in our house. She is of course using her dad’s study guide and has found it to be really helpful. Sophia stress tests a lot of our guides and can be a harsh critic, so it must be good!
